In this project, we try to propose a novel type of U-shaped SMA damper, which is able to convert shear deformation of the structure into bending deformation of the U-shaped SMA damper. My duty was to investigate the internal force diagrams under tangential displacement. My approach was to firstly derive the equations using the force method and then to build up a SAP2000 model and to compare the results. After verifying the results, I passed the analytical solution to my coworkers by for further design and simulation purposes.
